About Kent Tamang Hyulba

Welcome to Kent Tamang’s official webpage. Lasso phyaphulji (Greetings in Tamang)! Since the settlement right was granted to Gurkhas and their families in 2004 a large number of Tamang families are also settling down in Kent, United Kingdom. Tamang’s are one of the largest indigenous people of Nepal. They are Buddhist by birth. According to “Tamba Kaiten” (written script by the ancestors), they have been practicing Buddhism since the time of Bodhisatva Manju Shree in the Himalayan region. Tamang’s have their own language and widely spoken all over Nepal and India. They have preserved their distinct culture by passing down to generation after generations. Tamang Selo is one of the best and most popular genres of Napali folk song and sung in Tamang and Nepali. It’s usually accompanied by Tamang musical instruments called Damphu, Binayo and Tungna. A selo could be very lively or slow melodious usually, sung to express love, sorrow and stories of day to day life. Kent Tamang is not just an integral part of Tamang community in Kent to assist families in the time of need, it also integrates with the wider local communities. A group of dedicated Buddhist Thugje Chhenpo Mani Tsokpa (Mani Chanting Prayers group) of Kent Tamang offers prayers and assistance during the funeral service of a decease person in a Buddhist and Tamang cultural way. It also commits monthly prayers by visiting house to house. Kent Tamang also celebrates Sonam Lochhar (Buddhist New Year) every year in Kent to preserve and handover our culture to next generation.
